Day 17 - Giant Bear

We had our Physiology lecture this morning, learning about Blood. It was quite an interesting topic. After lunch, Yan Fang, Melissa, Eddy, Dion, Carol and I, the six of us went out to 名众乐园 for shopping. It was the first time we went out without the accompaniment of the local students. Scary but great experience! Since there were 6 of us, we split into 2 groups and took cabs to our destination. We were worried that the drivers may purposely bring us around, taking the longer route so that he would be able to earn more money. Luckily, this did not happen. Both trips cost around the same, which is about 30 yuan. That’s S$6 for 3 people! J Oh ya, while waiting for cabs, a local actually offered us a ride, but we rejected. In China, some locals who are not taxi drivers may give others a ride, charging at lower prices. This is definitely not appropriate in Singapore.

When we reach our destination, the first obstacle we met was to cross over the road to reach the other side. Usually, the local students would accompany us but now, we are all alone. So, we followed the locals and reach the opposite side safely.

Shopping began!

After a whole day of shopping, all of us felt really tired and we went to kfc for dinner. The staffs were not friendly at all. They don’t even wear a smile on their faces. I guess that’s because of the long queue which made them feel annoyed.

After all the shopping has been done, we headed back to dorm. It was about 7-8pm then and it was hard to get a cab. The traffic was chaotic, probably because of the peak hour. Getting a cab during peak hours can be a difficult task. You’ve got to be fast and quick, or else some others would have gotten it. After a long time, we finally managed to get on the cabs.

Waiting for cabs.

Oh ya! Eddy bought a huge bear for his sister. It costs only 99 yuan, which is not more than $20. It’s really worth but there may be some problem bringing it back. Haha! We were joking that maybe the bear needs an air ticket J

And here's Yan Fang.

Anyway, here are two photos i took this morning in the campus.

This pair of cute grandparents! They are going to shop for groceries, i guess.

Look at the crowd! It's their lunch time and everyone is rushing to the canteen for lunch. I can't imagine this scene happening in Np.

That’s all for today! Seeya! J

Reflection: It’s the first time we went out without the local students around. I must say it’s a great experience though scary. We met many different obstacles like crossing the dangerous road, getting a cab and rejecting a weird driver. We tried bargaining too! It was a great experienceJ

One thing we realized today was that in China, not only they have cabs; they also have another alternative, which is motorbikes-taxi. What do I mean by that? It’s actually taxi, but the vehicle used is motorbike! I saw a motorbike carrying 3 people; 2 passengers plus a driver. How dangerous is that?

Another thing we realized was that the taxi drivers do not drive slowly like how some of them do in Singapore to earn more money. Instead, like what Yan Fang said, they drive like F1 racers! Haha! It’s quite dangerous though, as they would change from lane to lane without giving signals.

Day 16 - Industrial visit to Coca cola factory

We had an industrial visit to the coca cola factory today! We went to the Hubei branch and the bus ride from the campus was about 1.5hr. As usual, most of us slept on bus while some energetic ones chatted. Upon reaching, we took some photos outside the factory.

 Coca Cola Truck.

We were then led into a meeting room and they gave us a short introduction on Coca Cola by showing us a video.

"We are the most respectfully admired World Class beverages Company!"

One of the scenes in the video they shared with us.

We were treated with a bottle of Coca Cola each too!

After that, we went around to see how the bottles of drinks were produced, assembled and packed for distribution. We were amazed by how it works! Below are some photos.

Notice the caps of the bottles? They are right in the middle of the photo.

These Cokes are ready to be distributed to other places for business.

This chart shows the growth in their business over the years.

Here's a map showing the different Coca Cola factories located around China.

After that, we went to a gallery where all the limited edition Coca Cola merchandises were displayed. And of course, photos were taken.

Our bus.

After the factory visit, we returned back to our campus and did some last minute changes to our presentation slides. I had cup noodles with Yan Fang for lunch while we were discussing and preparing for our presentation.

OIE presentation started and it’s on a first-come-first-serve basis. Nabila’s group started off pretty well, followed by groups of MDE students. My group had the presentation right after Eddy’s group as we needed a laptop. Most presentations were roughly about the same and the points mentioned were about the differences in food, climate, traffic, water while some thought of other more interesting points. We had a similarity about the time difference which is rather short and amusing since it’s the last point. The ending of all the presentations mark the end of the OIE lectures. It was the last lecture for OIE today! We then went back to our dorms and waited for the local students to come and bring us out.

Carol and Dion presenting.

In the evening, they arrived and about 10 of us went out. We took bus 702 which was really crowded at that time, probably because it’s the peak hour. I was among the last few to get on the bus and I had a shock! The bus driver said something like “the bus is too crowded. Please wait for the next bus.” He then attempted to drive the bus off and close the door when some of us had not boarded. Sarah was near the door and was the last to get on the bus. I think she got the most shock. Luckily, everyone managed to board the bus in the end.

We finally reached our destination, 徐东大街 in about 30min. We found Starbucks, Kfc and Pizza Hut restaurants at the shopping mall! It was a nice place for shopping as smoking is prohibitedJ

We were all so glad when we saw this sign:)

Actually, the main purpose of today’s outing is to try out the food in this restaurant called the Greenery Café. Since Dr Lau will be leaving Wuhan next week when Mr Imran arrives, we decided to have a farewell dinner together on Sunday. To my surprise, the restaurant seems to be really crowded and there were also people sitting outside the restaurant, waiting for their number to be called. Betty took a queue number and we were told to return in half an hour’s time.

Electronic board showing the queue number.

Customers waiting for their numbers to be called. Look at the number of customers waiting. This shows that this cafe's business is really good.

While waiting for our turn, we decided to explore the shopping mall. Betty and Xin Xin, the 2 local students brought us around the mall and introduced some of the famous shops to us. There is actually a ktv at the 6th floor and it was really spacious! Guess what? Their pricings are quite affordable too! In Singapore, usually they will count by the number of people but in China, you just have to pay for the room.

This is the place near the reception area.

Ktv.

There were other restaurants offering steamboat buffets, Korean food, western food and many more. We simply love that place.

After looking around, it's about time and we proceeded to the restaurant. Since our group was too large, we had to split into two groups. I sat with Jasmin, Cindy, Yan Fang, Kimberley and Letty. They offer a wide variety of food and all of them look really delicious. The prices were affordable as well, since there's no Gst and service charge like in Singapore.

That's all for today! Seeya! :)

Reflection: Through the visit to Coca cola factory today, I learnt more about the processing and packaging of Coca cola! It was really amazing! As for the OIE presentation, i learnt quite a lot from the presentations. It cleared some misconceptions I used to have and i find it a good chance to learn more about the cultures and practices in China. Something important i realised today is that every country has its own cultures, practices and beliefs. We should try to understand them and accept them to make the world a better place without conflicts:)
